Hi Friends,
Don’t forget tomorrow May 4th at 4pm CDT is my gluten free flour tortilla workshop! Check out all the details here:
Have you ever gone to a game at a stadium and looked for truly gluten free options?
It varies from venue to venue but often the only option is a packaged product or sneaking chomps in your pockets. The professional baseball stadium near me lets us bring in a gallon ziplock bag per person with food - I have to say I really appreciate that. The men’s pro soccer stadium added a gluten free food vendor last year, and that was such a treat.
While options are expanding at several venues near me (not all by any means) I got a behind the scenes peek into one innovative stadium’s food program that I want to share with you.
I was invited by an allergist that I work with in a culinary medicine program to tour CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, tagging along with some representatives from FARE who are in town for the 15 and FARE initiative. (Side note- I’m now a certified FARECheck instructor!)
This stadium is the home of KC Current and is the first stadium in the U.S. built specifically for a women’s sports team. Can you believe it’s the first one??? Me either!
What an amazing program. The food service in the stadium was designed from the beginning to accommodate food allergies, and intolerances.
What have they done differently?
Approximately 70% of the offerings currently are gluten free, (they use the symbol AG -avoiding gluten)
There is no loose flour allowed in the stadium.
There are no pretzels for sale. (Crumbly crumb crumbs)
They label allergens on the menus/boards and train staff about cross contact.
There are many dedicated gluten free fryers.
Even stadium staples like chicken tenders are gluten free throughout the stadium.
Whoa, now friends it gets even better.
I know you’re excited already. But the food at the stadium wasn’t just chicken fingers and fries. They’ve partnered with 10 local restaurants to offer a wide array of truly delicious options from BBQ to Thai, Health focused to Mexican, to desserts and so much more.
There are local wines and spirits available, I saw vegetarian options. The suites even had custom menus that are unique to each game.
I have to say, I’ve never been so excited to eat at a sporting event!!
Tell me, what’s your refreshments strategy at a ballgame? Is it purse/pocket snacks? Do you have good options near you? How could they be better?
Watching a game at home?
I got you:
Happy Sport-snacking,
Rachel
