It’s no secret I love to travel. Traveling with my family (or without them) is one of my greatest pleasures. I love learning new things, experiencing life in other cultures even just a little, and spontaneity. But how can you experience those things when you’re gluten free? When you have serious dietary limitations it can really feel impossible.

I’m about to give you my TOP TIP for gluten free travel.

Have a REALLY GOOD gluten free restaurant card. Something written in the local language, talking about local ingredients, that explains what cross contact is, and the lengths that you need the restaurant, hotel or other establishment to go to keep you safe.

What is a gluten free restaurant card? It’s a card that you hand your waiter (or show on your phone) when traveling, that clearly outlines your dietary needs and limitations in the local language.

I cannot tell you how many times these cards have come in handy (or downright avoided disaster) for our family. I’ve purchased no less than 7 of these in the past, and will continue to for each new language/country.

What’s so special about THESE cards?

Each card is carefully crafted by someone with celiac disease, and then goes through 2 sets of translations to ensure accuracy.
Unlike shorter, less-detailed cards, each card it lists out local ingredients and dishes that have hidden (and not hidden!) gluten in them. Saying “I can’t have gluten” just isn’t usually enough to keep celiacs safe — many people preparing your food don’t know what ingredients have gluten in them.
It expressly mentions that we cannot eat food from pans, shared fryers, or cooking surfaces that have had cross-contact with gluten
To ensure the card is taken seriously, it adds an apology for the inconvenience, and emphasizes that avoiding gluten is a medical obligation — not a choice.
